 $ 2,200.00
(Double-Occupancy)

This "add-on" to the Palau trip is truly an unique diving opportunity.  Round trip airfare from Palau, round trip transfers and all taxes are included.  5 days/4 nights accommodations on the live aboard "SS THORFINN" with all meals and beverages included.  Unlimited diving is included in this price. With over 60 Divable ships this is rated the "Best wreck diving anywhere in the world."

thorfinn.jpg (26346 bytes)The SS THORFINN is a 52 meter (170 feet) floating resort for divers - a purposefully converted former Norwegian whale hunter which is based in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia.  The THORFINN, a pioneer of Pacific live a boards, was one of the first such ships conceived and operated principally for sports divers. Spacious accommodations, lounges, whirl pool spa, and continuous diving options are a feature of the THORFINN. Lower guest rooms are reduced in number, and each has been restructured to accommodate a queen bed and a single bed, large private toilet and shower rooms, two wash basins, a multi-system TV monitor/VCR, and CD/Cassette stereo systems  A large guest lounge on 'C' Deck has indirect lighting and a big enclosed aquarium.. A high definition stereo TV monitor/VCR is centrally located over the aquarium. An expanded video library features hundreds of  films for viewing privately in guest rooms or lounges as desired. CD photo and audio players augment the facilities.
All four dive boats have seating to handle 6 divers per launch. With one guide and a boatman for each six divers, personalized service and safety is optimized during diving operations.
Videography can review a previous dive's work on their personal room's TV monitor instead of waiting at a busy lounge system. Camera service tables feature state of the art service equipment.   'THORFINN' has the distinction of being the only know steam powered dive vessel in the world  providing silent power while underway.   Truk Lagoon's 'Shipwreck City' is the site of some of the world's best, safest and most affordable diving. Warm even temperatures at any depth without currents and open seas, permit an enjoyable schedule of up to 4 dives per day in good visibility.   THORFINN employs a system of anchoring at several central locations in Truk always adjacent and close to the wreck sites chosen each day. Uncrowned six person launches are within 10 minutes average distance to the dive attractions.

Engine telegraph aboard the Shinkoku Maru.

Shinkoku Maru - a fleet oilier and her mission was the refueling of ships at sea.   She participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Sank during the battle she now lies in 110 feet of water.

Fujikawa Maru - A 437 foot Aircraft Ferry, carrying planes and spare parts for the Japanese empire.  Easily accessible, resting on an even keel on the sandy bottom in clear and still waters, the only apparent damage is a torpedo hole on the starboard side.  The ship is covered with heavy soft coral growths on davits, masts and king posts.  The deck has and assortment of military items covering it, including a bow gun, ammunition and gas masks.  The holds contain spare parts for Mitsubishi "Zero's".  Among the parts are wings, engines, fuselages and tail assemblies.  This is a perfect night dive due to the visibility and depth.

Heian Maru - a sub tender carrying munitions and spare parts to support the submarine fleet. Before the war she was a combined passenger-freighter as were a majority of the Japanese fleet .  At 510 feet and 11,000 tons  she is the largest wreck in the lagoon.  She lies on her port side in shallow water.  In her second hold are several torpedoes sticking upright out of the muck.

Hoyo Maru - This tanker capsized before she sank as she was in for repairs due to a torpedo damage near the bow.  Her keel is only  around 12 feet below the surface of the lagoon and is covered with stony coral.   The capsized hull of Hoyo Maru is at the center rear at the picture to the right.

Kiyosumi Maru - She's a very unlucky ship! Built in 1934 by Kawasaki she participated in the battle of Midway, June 1942.  She was bombed in November 1943 and towed to Kavieng where she was attacked on Christmas.  She was making her way to Truk under her own power when she was torpedoed on New Year's Day, 1944.  She was then towed to Truk by Oyodo where she was sunk, all 43 hands on board going down with her.. Lying on her port beam at around 100 feet with her bow under 70 feet of water. Her aft hold contains bicycles, although they're starting to disintegrate somewhat and a huge bronze prop.

Hino Maru - This small gunboat (actually an Armed Merchant Cruiser) is also called the "Gun High" wreck.  The bow gun is less than 6 feet below the surface at low tide.  Since this wreck is so shallow you can spend a lot of dive time here.

Hoki Maru - This freighter is in more than 136 feet of water.  The No. 5 hold has a collection of historic vehicles inside.  Caterpillar tractors and bulldozers are scattered about, and below the between -deck at about 156 feet are two 1941 Toyota Model-1 4x2 six cylinder trucks weighing more than 5,500 pounds.   These Toyotas are almost exact copies of the 1939 U.S.-made Chevrolet truck with their rounded shapes, bull nose radiators, large tires and huge headlights.  This is an Advanced Dive.

Kenho Maru - She lies upright at a depth of 120 feet although the bridge and forecastle are considerably shallower and offer a lot to see.

Nippo Maru - She's located in 115 feet of water and has a battle tank aboard.   This Japanese Typr-95 Ha-Go light tank held only a crew of three and was powered by a six-cylinder, in-line, air-cooled diesel engine

Yamagiri Maru  - She went down in the Repair Anchorage north of Fefan Island.  The wreck is known for its cargo of 18 inch naval artillery shells, which is a pretty amazing sight.  These shells were destined for the Japanese super battleships Yamato and Musashi, the only ships to defy the 16 inch ordinance limit agreed upon by the League of Nations, hence the only ships to have such long range capabilities.  The Yamagiri was attacked by the submarine USS Drum before coming to Truk and repairs were begun in Rabaul. Rabaul came under attack before Truk, and Yamagiri was transported to the Truk repair facility to complete her rehabilitation. Instead, she was finished off in the February 16-17 attack. She lies on her port beam on a 110 foot bottom.

Sankisan Maru -  An American built ship that was captured right after Pearl Harbor. She was a combined aircraft ferry and ordinance freighter.  She was devastated during the attack on Truk, and her aft hull is now disintegrated.  Her holds contain Mitsubishi A6M Reisen fighters, code named "Zero" by the allies, several heavy trucks, and tons of ammunition

Sankisan Maru's last moments.  One torpedo has struck amidships, while another erratically heads for her stern.
