In Belize, the barrier reef stretches from Ambergris Cay in the north to the Bay of Honduras in the south.  Hundreds of cays dot the barrier reef in and outside.  Expect a stunning variety of undersea terrain, walls, drop-offs, tunnels, swim-through, spur-and-groove formations and shallow coral gardens.  The barrier reef explodes with a dazzling array of exotic sponges, reef tropicals, schooling and pelagic fish, turtles, eagle and manta rays, nurse sharks, pods of dolphins, even whale sharks.

Blue Hole - This unusual dive pierces the center of Lighthouse Atoll and is the largest ocean sinkhole in the world.  It's a great dive for its geology, not its marine life.  Limestone ledges, overhangs and a enormous cavern that features stalactites and stalagmites.  On the north side, huge stalactites just down from an overhang at 115 feet; some measure 40 feet long and 10 feet wide.

Ambergris Cay - The largest of the 200 cays located off the coast of Belize.  Only half a mile from the barrier reef.   Most dives are made outside the barrier reef in spur-and-groove canyons at depths ranging from 40 to 100 feet.  These high-profile channels are covered with tube, vase and barrel sponges along with a spectacular variety of marine life.

The Atolls - An atoll is a ring of coral reef that surrounds a lagoon.  Although atolls are rare in the Caribbean, Belize has three of them.  Each atoll is distinct even though they share some characteristics.  There are hundreds of shallow patch reefs in the lagoons with calm, protected waters-perfect for snorkeling.  Just seaward of the coral rings, walls plummet to amazing depths.
Ambergris Cay - Dive into deep spur-and-groove canyons.  The drop-offs start at shallow depths, just 25 to 25 feet.  Clear waters wash the walls guaranteeing outstanding color and visibility - 80 to 200 feet. Turneffe Islands Atoll - Measuring 30 miles long and 9 miles wide this is the largest atoll and the closest to shore.  A forest of mangroves  is the link for an explosion of marine life on the 70 dive sites.
Lighthouse Reef - Slightly smaller at 28 miles long this atolls' southern end forms a crescent five miles in diameter.  More that 40 dive sites are found here.
Glover's Reef - The least visited of the atoll's this one is wilderness diving at its best.  There are numerous world class reefs beneath the coconut-crowded islets.
Murray Long Cay Drop-off - The coral heads rise from 80 feet to 50 feet to form swim through canyons that parallel and abysmal 3,000 foot drop off.

Placencia - is at the southern tip of a long, narrow, sandy peninsula in Southern Belize.  Spectacular walls and canyons start just 80 feet off the beach.  This area also has the most diversified diving from shallow coral gardens, spur-and-groove formations, barrier reef, drop-offs, patch reef, and nearby Glover's Atoll.  Manta rays, whales and dolphins are among the sea life.

Shark-Ray Alley - Nurse sharks and stingrays congregate in 8 feet of water to be fed and fondled.  Great variety of marine life and coral formations. Excellent for snorkeling or scuba diving.
